John Bornsworth is the owner and principal ecologist at Peninsula Environmental Group, Inc., based in Port Angeles, Washington. He is an ISA Board-Certified Master Arborist (BCMA), one of the first ten professionals in the Pacific Northwest Chapter to earn the credential. He is also an ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist (RCA), Tree and Plant Appraisal Qualified (TPAQ), Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ), and a Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL). John has worked full-time as a consulting arborist, forester, and ecologist since 2015, with a professional background in environmental and natural resources industries dating to 2003.
John has evaluated tens of thousands of individual trees and forested tracts up to 5,000 acres across Washington, Colorado, and Michigan. He is one of only a dozen approved TPAQ instructors nationwide and frequently lectures on tree management, plant ecology, ecosystem restoration and site development. His work includes arboricultural and forestry-related litigation support, construction planning around trees, and tree health and safety analysis. He regularly collaborates with private landowners, engineers, planners, and regulators to develop site-specific solutions that integrate ecological function with regulatory compliance and practical implementation.
John leads shoreline and wetland assessment and restoration projects across the Puget Sound region. Since 2015, he routinely applies the USACE 1987 Wetland Delineation Manual (with the Western Mountains, Valleys, and Coast Region Supplement) and the Washington State 2014 Wetland Rating System to support wetland area evaluation and mitigation. He provides technical support to Shore Friendly programs and nonprofit partners for mitigation design, native revegetation, undesirable plants, and living slope stabilization.
Trees are a repository of their entire natural history.
