Wildland Fire Plan at Battelle Marine Laboratory

Peninsula Environmental is excited to announce our recent project with Battelle Marine Laboratories in Sequim, WA. In 2022, we were tasked with conducting a thorough wildland fire mitigation plan for their facility. Wildland fires have become a growing concern in recent years due to climate change and human activity, making it essential for facilities like Battelle Marine Laboratories to prepare and protect against these disasters.

Our team at Peninsula Environmental is committed to providing innovative solutions that address environmental challenges while ensuring the safety of our communities. This project was a perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate our expertise in wildland fire mitigation planning and implementation. The goal of the project was to identify potential risks and develop a plan that would minimize the impact of a wildland fire on the facility and its surrounding areas. Our team conducted a thorough assessment of the site, considering factors such as topography, weather patterns, and vegetation. We also evaluated the existing fire suppression systems and equipment on site to determine their effectiveness in the event of a wildfire.

Based on our assessment, we developed a comprehensive plan that included both preventative measures and emergency response procedures. The plan consisted of several key components, including vegetation management, fuel reduction, and fire suppression strategies.

Vegetation management was a critical component of our plan. The area surrounding Battelle Marine Laboratories had an abundance of fuel for potential fires, including dry brush, grasses, and trees. Our team worked closely with the facility’s staff to develop a plan to reduce the amount of vegetation that could contribute to a wildfire. This involved trimming back overhanging branches and removing dead or dying vegetation to reduce the amount of fuel available to a wildfire.

Fuel reduction was also a crucial component of our plan. We worked with the facility’s staff to identify areas where fuel reduction was necessary, such as near buildings and critical infrastructure. We also developed a plan to reduce the amount of fuel in these areas, including clearing out dead and dry vegetation and reducing the density of live vegetation.

In addition to vegetation management and fuel reduction, we developed a comprehensive fire suppression plan. This involved evaluating the existing fire suppression systems and equipment on site to ensure they were effective in the event of a wildfire. We also developed an emergency response plan in case a wildfire did occur, including evacuation procedures and communication protocols.

Throughout the project, our team worked closely with the staff at Battelle Marine Laboratories to ensure that the plan was tailored to their specific needs and requirements. We also provided training and education to the staff to ensure that they were prepared to implement the plan in case of an emergency.

The wildland fire mitigation plan developed for Battelle Marine Laboratories was a comprehensive and innovative approach to addressing the risks posed by wildfires. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure that the plan was tailored to the specific needs of the facility and its surrounding areas. The plan included both preventative measures and emergency response procedures, providing a complete solution for protecting against wildfires.

At Peninsula Environmental, we are committed to providing innovative solutions to environmental challenges while ensuring the safety of our communities. This project was an excellent example of our expertise in wildland fire mitigation planning and implementation. We are proud of the work we accomplished with Battelle Marine Laboratories and are confident that our plan will help protect the facility and its surrounding areas against the risks posed by wildfires.
